Laboratory

Patients Served

All Inpatients at NBRHC and outpatients from North Bay and surrounding areas.

Overview

The Department of Laboratory Services at the North Bay Regional Health Centre is committed to providing quality laboratory services for inpatients, registered outpatients, and referred-in testing.

The Laboratory assists the health care provider in the delivery of patient care by providing consultative services, procurement and testing to investigate and /or monitor illness or to identify a state of well being. The Department of Laboratory Services consists of Core Lab (Hematology, Biochemistry, Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology, Histopathology/Cytology and Laboratory Specimen Procurement) and Dispatch (Central Receiving/Phlebotomy).

Additional Information

During other times than regular hours of operation, weekends and statutory holidays there is a skeleton staff adequate to cover only those inpatient procedures considered essential to manage the acutely ill patient. Similarly, the service is not designed for outpatients, unless there is an emergency (a state in which the life of the patient is in danger).

Note: Certain tests are not considered a benefit under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). These tests will be billed directly to the patient and may be covered by private insurers.
Depending on the type of laboratory test ordered, the tests will be processed on-site or referred to other specialty laboratories.   Referred out test must have a completed requisition from the referral lab.

Patients are processed in numerical order although some patients will be processed on a priority basis due to specialty clinic requirements.

Patients dropping off specimens must register.  Specimens must be labeled with the patient’s first and last name, date of birth as well as date and time of collection.
