Emergency Services

In an Emergency do not hesitate to go directly to our Emergency Department located at 50 College Drive, North Bay.

Each year over 45,000 people visit the North Bay Regional Health Centre's Emergency Department. Some 100 to 200 patients are seen daily. Of that 15 to 20 require emergency or urgent attention. Nurses and physicians are available to provide expert and immediate care to those requiring treatment for sudden and serious medical and surgical problems.

The Emergency Department is open 24 hr/day 7 days per week. It is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of registered nurses, registered respiratory therapists, social services, pastoral care, crisis intervention, orthopedic technicians and other members of our health care team.

To serve you better we have implemented a 5-level triage system. Highest priority is given to those who are critically ill. Upon assessment people with emergencies will be treated first.

The goals of triage:

  • To rapidly identify patients with life threatening conditions;
  • To determine the most appropriate treatment;
  • To decrease congestion in emergency treatment areas.

Every patient will be seen, by a registered nurse with special skills and training in triage. Patients should let the nurse know if their conditions get worse.

There are five levels of triage - patients will be seen by a physician in order of their assessed triage level.

Level 1 RESUSCITATION:
Condition threatens life or limb and requires immediate, aggressive intervention.
Level 2 EMERGENT:
There is a potential threat to life or limb that requires rapid intervention.
Level 3 URGENT:
There is a potential to progress to a serious problem requiring emergency intervention.
Level 4 LESS URGENT:
Factors of age and distress are considered. There is a potential for deterioration or complications.
Level 5 NON URGENT:
Conditions that may be acute but non-urgent as well as conditions which may be part of a chronic problem or without evidence of deterioration. Interventions for some of these can be delayed.
