Purpose
The purpose of the North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) Research Ethics Board (REB) is to ensure that all research involving human subjects is conducted according to ethical principles and procedures, and adheres to organizational, legal and regulatory ethical and scientific standards while operating in an environment sensitive to diversity.
Mandate
Research ethics norms are governed by a set of commonly held and valued ethical principles. As the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS) has been adopted as a national standard, the North Bay Regional Health Centre Research Ethics Board subscribes to, and is guided by, these seven principles:
- Requirement for Free and Informed Consent
- Respect for Vulnerable Persons
- Respect for Privacy and Confidentiality
- Respect for Justice and Inclusiveness
- Balancing of Harms and Benefits
- Minimizing Harm
- Maximizing Benefit
All research undertaken at or under the auspices of the North Bay Regional Health Centre involving living human participants or human biological materials must conform to the ethical principles of research as articulated by the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans, 2010. This applies to staff, physicians or students, regardless of where the research is conducted.
