Program Overview
Healing Opportunities Promoting Empowerment (H.O.P.E.) is a multi-disciplinary team through which a variety of therapeutic services and activities are delivered to the North Bay Regional Health Centre's five programs. Collaboration and partnerships with the program areas, community agencies and services are essential to our effectiveness.
Our aim is to improve quality of living through enhanced independence and community reintegration. The H.O.P.E. Team believes in the human potential for recovery. Individuals with a mental illness are empowered to choose, get and keep valued roles. Empowerment opportunities are promoted through individualized programs and specialized services.
Services Offered
Academic Services
This program is available to in-patients and out-patients of the North Bay Regional Health Centre and C.H.O.I.C.E.S. Services available are: academic assessments, remedial, upgrading, credit accumulation through on-site work or correspondence and college preparation.

Canteen Services
The Canteen offers a variety of healthy snacks, beverages and hot and cold lunch entrées. Popcorn is available every Friday.

Chaplaincy Services
Chaplaincy Services provides spiritual and religious care for patients, their family or friends, and staff. It is multi-faith to support all religions and beliefs. The Chaplain is here to discuss your needs, provide one to one pastoral counselling, or connect you with other persons and resources suited to your unique spiritual care needs.

All services are open to everyone. Other services can be arranged in response to needs.

Dental Services
The North Bay Regional Health Centre's Dental Clinic provides high quality preventive and restorative dental services based on the standards of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons. These services are provided in the order that the patients may continue to maintain and achieve optimal oral health contributing to an overall improved health status. Procedures may include but are not limited to, restorations of cavities, root canal therapy, extractions, fabrication of dentures, scaling and prophylaxis.
New patients will be given a thorough examination including periodontal, TMJ disorder and cancer screening and will be placed on a treatment plan based on their specific needs and assessments. Educational programs and done in consultation with various disciplines and can be done on an individual or group basis.
Dental Services are currently offered 4 days a week.

Hairstyling & Barbering Services
Hairstyling services are available to patients of the hospital and patients who live in the community who are involved in vocational services at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. The hairstylist provides haircuts, styling, colours, perms, beard trimming, and other areas of self-care such as manicures, pedicures, waxing, and make-up applications. Appointments preferred but not always necessary. We also offer a learning environment where patients discover self-care skills through groups or one-on-one sessions.

Native Services
Native Services provides support to the Native population of the hospital and to patients residing in the community through programming such as social luncheons, community outings, talking circles, drop-in centre, and traditional activities like Native arts and crafts and language classes. Other services include the coordination of sweatlodge ceremonies, seasonal feasts, translation services, and may provide spiritual/cultural assessments, counselling, liaison, cultural workshops and an escort for patients who wish to have a home visit.

Occupational Therapy
The Occupational Therapist promotes the patient's engagement in valued roles, in particular, work. With the use of standardized assessments, informal tests and interviews, the Occupational Therapist promotes awareness of a person's strengths and limitations in these roles. The OT assists the patient to then set and achieve meaningful and realistic goals. Treatment is offered both individually and in a group context. These programs use meaningful activities and discussion to meet the needs and desires of each individual. Group topics may include self-care, self-esteem, prevocational and work skills, assertiveness, volunteerism, social skills, budgeting, etc.

Physiotherapy
This service restores and/or maintains physical function of those patients who are impaired due to illness, injury and/or the aging process. Assessments are provided upon referral from a physician. A thorough assessment is completed to determine the patient's physical capabilities and goals of treatment to reach an optimum function level.

Recreational Services
This therapeutic recreation program is designed to support and enhance the leisure lifestyle of our patients by offering stimulating and exciting activities. With two Leisure Life Skills Instructors on board, leisure education/counselling, specialized therapeutic recreational programming and coordination of hospital wide, large group activities such as bingo, bowling, social games, arts and crafts, camping, carnival, and community events are available.

Vocational Services
Provides vocational rehabilitation services to patients; evaluates rehabilitation potential by reviewing patients psychiatric, medical, educational and employment histories; collects relevant data; and prepares sick benefit and C.P.P. applications. The program also assists in job searches, job coaching, work safety teaching and training placements, and acts as a case manager for patients involved in community work; liaises with community agencies, employers, educational/training facilities and families as well as the H.O.P.E. Team and program staff.
